Request for Applications

The Ohio Resource Network for Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities invites applications for the 2005-2006 Student-Led Initiative. For this grant competition, the Ohio Resource Network will consider only applications that meet the requirements outlined below under the section on Requirements of Applicants.

Purpose of the Initiative

The purpose of this award is to provide opportunities for students to voice their opinion about ways to improve their school and make it a place where everyone can feel connected and valued.

Background

Research has shown that students cannot learn and teachers cannot teach in environments where they do not feel connected, cared for or valued. Positive, caring conditions prevent unruly, disruptive or violent behavior between students and between students and staff. In recognition of this, and that youth (students) are our greatest resource in promoting school safety, the Ohio Resource Network launched the Student-Led Grant Initiative during the spring of 2001. This initiative offers students the opportunity to enhance learning environments where all individuals can feel included and connected. With financial support and technical assistance provided through this initiative, students across Ohio have begun to build educational communities where parents, students, and school personnel are encouraged to contribute to and become an active member of their learning environments. For more information about the initiative, or to review some the youths’ actions, please visit: www.ebasedprevention.org.

Requirements of Applicants

  • Applicants must form a youth-led group (groups Should NOT be pre-existing ) of approximately 15-20 students who represent cultural, gender, and racial diversity. Schools are encouraged to select students who are presently not involved in clubs, sports, or other school activities. Students who are chronically tardy, truant, or struggling academically should not be overlooked for inclusion in this group.
  • Student group members must administer school-wide climate surveys during the fall and spring quarters of the 2005-2006 academic year.
  • Using a guide provided by the Ohio Resource Network, groups will be responsible for meeting on a regular basis (weekly or monthly depending on needs of the group) to determine/organize school-wide activities.
  • Student group members will be responsible for submitting quarterly recorder forms (1 page each) to the Ohio Resource Network during the 2005-2006 academic year.
