Students learn more effectively in places where they feel safe and secure from harm. To help schools develop and implement comprehensive school safety promotion programs, information is provided on ways to establish a sense of community among staff and students, assessing the conditions in the learning environment to ascertain how safe and secure students feel, developing ways to enhance security in areas in the school that are known to be high risk areas for violence, preparing the staff and community to respond to a crisis should one occur, providing services for students and their families in order to maximize a student's learning potential, and creating a safe, supportive workplace for school personnel.
