Inhalants are substances or fumes from products such as glue or paint thinner that are sniffed or "huffed" to cause an immediate high. Because they affect the brain with much greater speed and force than many other substances, they can cause irreversible physical and mental damage. Between 1994 and 2000, the number of new inhalant users increased more than 50 percent, from 618,000 new users in 1994 to 979,000 in 2000. More than 2 million youths aged 12 to 17 reported using inhalants at least once in their lifetime. This scenario outlines the dangers of inhalant abuse and the attractive nature of its use to youth.
